David ‘Baddy’ Treloar (with Owl Chapman sitting) in the carpark at The Bower in Manly in 1974 while the Coke contest was there that year.
This picture was published in 'Surf International' in the year that it was taken, but never since. I was delighted to find the negs I shot that day, including the picture that I call Arcadia, in almost 100 rolls that I’d never proofed. Wayne looks as if he’s been cast in bronze.
Back in the late 1960s, you could still drive along the grass just above the boulders at Lennox Head in northern NSW, and camping there for a day or two wasn’t out of the question.
This was taken when George was shooting point-of-view footage for the Hollywood movie, 'Big Wednesday'. By George’s appalling standards, this room is very tidy.
'Tracks' ran this picture recently with the caption ‘An early 70s day at Margarets with the kind of car to wave ratio we all dream of’.

This picture was take while the Coke contest was on one year... suspicion radiating from Michael on the beach. In the water he was bold and instinctive, the dominant surfer of his era.

A picture that was lost after I sent it to 'Surfer' magazine in 1968 and they used it on a cover. A black and white dupe of it was found in the 'Surfer' archive and returned over 40 years later.

My friend Nigel Coates surfing at Smiths Beach in Western Australia with Murray Smith paddling out. The south-west corner is one of the great surfing coastlines in Australia.

This picture was shot with the wonderful little Nikonos water camera. The only disadvantage was that it had a relatively wide-angle lens and you had to get ridiculously close to the action. I could’ve reached out and touched Ted as he went by...
Angourie was one of the early point break discoveries on the east coast, and one of the better ones. The surf really isn’t too good when this pictures was taken, but it sure is beautiful.
